Burton Manor College

Regrettably  Burton Manor College closed on 31st March 2011.

Since 1948 Burton Manor College was  a centre of development for people who have come for professional and/or personal reasons on short day or residential courses.

It has to be seen whether the College can reopen in the near future with another owner.

Burton Manor features an historic garden designed by the famous landscape designer Thomas Mawson in 1906. Today this is still as he intended, with geometric gardens on the east, south and north of the house.

The east garden, through an ornamental stone gateway, is a sunken parterre overhung with mature trees. By contrast, the north garden is an elegant enclosure raised above the forecourt.

“Taking tea” on the terrace you look across the south garden, with its yew hedges surrounding formal compartments on either side of a lily pond, to the fields beyond.

There were two restoration projects running at the time of closure -

The Glasshouse Project in the walled Garden. This is entering its final stage and is continuing through The Friends of Burton Manor. The 120ft long Edwardian Glasshouse has been assembled on the restored brick base. It is hoped that the project will be completed and officially opened in Spring 2011.

The Ice House Project. A path has been created and viewing access has been worked on. There is no news on how this will progress.

More information, when available, will appear on The Friends of Burton Manor page.
