In 1728 King George III granted a Royal Charter for a weekly Market to be held on a Friday. It is understood at that time the Market was located around the area of Neston Cross in the centre of Neston Town.

During the mid 1800s many people travelled from North Wales across the Dee estuary on foot, on ponies and donkeys and carts to go to Neston Market.

Evidence suggests that in the early 1900s monthly Farmers’ type Markets were held in Neston. These were much used by the wives of farmers for the sale of cheese, butter and eggs.

A function of the former Neston Urban District Council, Neston Market began as an indoor Market at Neston Institute (now Neston Civic Hall) in May 1958 until August 1965.

Due to growth the Market transferred to the basement area of Neston Town Hall in September 1965 where it continues as an Indoor Food Market to this day.

In 1967, due to its popularity, the Market extended to outdoor general retail trading. Initially trading was in the immediate environs of the Town Hall and eventually extended to surrounding car parks.

Following local government reorganisation in 1974 the Market became a function of Ellesmere Port and Neston Borough Council, which in 2009 handed over to Cheshire West and Chester Council. The market is now held in the new Market Square, between the new Sainsbury’s supermarket and the Town Hall.

Friday Market day is a popular weekly event in Neston that attracts customers from far and near. It is also a focal point for the town where shoppers and ‘locals’ meet. Friendships have developed between customers and traders through many years, which add to the atmosphere.
