Heritage Open Days celebrate England’s history, architecture and culture.

Heritage Open Days in 2011 are – Saturday 3rd to Sunday 11th  September.

The following events, in and around Neston, have been planned for this year -

Neston Civic Society Guided Walk
This walk is around the Neston Conservation Area. It is based on the Neston Town Trail Leaflet, which includes the town’s historic buildings and some history.
Saturday 3rd September, Sunday 4th September, Saturday 10th September and Sunday 11th September at 2 pm. Maximum in group 16. Meet at Neston church gates, Neston,
The walk takes about 1¼ hours. Pre-booking not required. There is disabled access

Burton Manor – Friday 9th and Saturday 10th September.
You are invited to join a conducted Tour of the recently restored Edwardian Garden Glasshouse & Walled Garden at Burton Manor, and view the original Thomas Mawson designed formal gardens. Also visit the impressive early 19th century Ice House.
Tours are free and start at 2pm each day. They last approx. 45 minutes. Advance booking is essential – please phone 0151 353 8783 to ensure your place.
Coffee shop and Gift shop will be open at the end of each tour. Some parts of the site are difficult for people with disabilities – but generally the tour is wheelchair friendly.

Neston Collieries Walk

Parkgate Society at St Thomas’ Church, Parkgate.

Saturday 10th 2011, 2 to 4pm
Display of old photos of Parkgate and a self guided tour along the Parade. Copies will be available from Nichols Ice Cream shop and The Parkgate Stores.

Parkgate and Neston United Reformed Church
Parkgate Road, Parkgate, Neston,
Open airy colourful church, established in 1858. Interesting architectural features.
Sat 10th September – 10.00am to 4.00pm. car park, wheelchair access, refreshments and garden.

St Mary and St Helen Church, High Street, Neston,
The church has many attractions, including stained glass windows by Kempe, Hardman, Morris, Byrne-Jones and many more, the Falklands Chapel rescued from HMS Plymouth, the font used for the christening of Lady Hamilton, the unique Viking stones found nowhere else in Europe. Guides will be available during opening times, to speak and take visitors around.

St Thomas’ Church, Parkgate, Neston
This newly refurbished church was closed for many years due to the need for major renovations but was reopened in 2010. Local community projects, in support of the ‘Bishop’s Trust’, raised the money for the renovation and the ‘Fisherman’s Church’ as it is known locally is a testament to their sterling efforts. Guides will be available during opening times, to speak and take visitors around.

No booking required. There is disabled access. Refreshments available.
